What if you wanted to make websites and you wanted to make many of them and you did not know any HTML? What then? you would probably go for those  WYSIWYG editors that will make experts of ignorant webmaster wannabes. Very quickly you would be disillusioned with yourself and what you could not do. What if you did not give up and had money to fed your goal or dream?

You would probably go to someone who knew how to make page generators where a machine would spew out HTML from what you tell it to do. You would have an instant website maker and you could make a thousand websites in the time it takes to make one by hand.

Who knows what goes on in the mind of a robot as it weaves its way though your website, seeking that which it so likes to eat, links. does it make a decision that your site is junk right there and then? Does it wait until it has spidered your site completely before it consults its knowledge base on which to base its further action? I am often in awe of these robots and spiders and love them and hate them at the same time. I guess this comes from my own ignorance of what they do. Some people feel quite comfortable with them and bait them with food in order to get high rankings on the search pages.

It first, I did not understand what the big deal was. Why should i care for the search results? You can blame ignorance for this nonchalant attitude. I then realized that being on the front pages meant first crack at the visitors who are obviously seeking something. Then  a light began to dawn on me, that people who search the net are doing so out of some need. This need is something that everyone who wants to fill this need is fighting about. Someone wants to buy and the sellers and hawkers elbow each other ot be in the face of the buyers. Simple enough. Hence, website promotion.

They say that the best way to bring traffic to a website is through the search engines. This is really quite obvious because people use search engines to look for sites that have the keywords that they want. It's not really the keywords they were looking for but the products that the keywords represented. Thus began the great keywords war where marketers would outdo each other in paying search engines for keywords that paid the most money, an activity with was sure to drive the prices of these keywords even higher. You see, people looking to buy something from the internet would use the search engines to look for those websites selling those products that matched the keywords. .Google calls this the Adwords System. Marketers pay Google to place their sites on the top of the search results pages in order to get first crack at those buyers looking for those keywords.

Promote these: Fear, sex, eating and sleeping, Dreams, Making money online, Rails brought me to Seaside, Lotto.

This is the easiest way to promote a site that is selling something. Sometimes the site would not be selling directly but would be an affiliate of another site that sells the product directly. Affiliate marketing can be very lucrative hence, the drive to promote using the search engines.

Do Traffic Exchanges work? At first glance, it seems a confusing concept. Look at my website and I will look at yours. Taken to the extreme are automatic traffic exchanges where a website is dished out every 5 or ten seconds and you must click in order to gain a similar page view of your own website. There is nothing said about the kind of website that you want to visit; just websites served from a robot table. There are other exchanges where you can select the type of website that you want to visit and you just select from a list. All of these things are simply boring. I doubt if anyone seriously gains repeat visitors at all.

Another type of exchange is the Click Exchange where you click on someone's site's ads for clicks on you own. Beware of these exchanges because they are illegal and certainly immoral. Someone new to the Internet and Web Promotion can fall into the trap of thinking that if it is on the web, it must be legal or it would have been taken down already. Forewarned is forearmed.

I remember when it used to be that Yahoo was the most important website there was on the Internet. Really, I somehow knew that there were such things as Hypertext and how a link would bring you to another page. A lot of things could be done with it and it boggled the mind. There were a lot of search engines like Infoseek and Excite, but Yahoo had a very big share of it. It was not until Google came along that search engines really came to its own. Many people wondered aloud how Google could make money from just having a search engine. I did so too as I wondered how Yahoo made its money considering that it gave away a lot of things for free such as free email. The banners on the websites did explain to an extent how money could be made from a website.

There were not too many books on Web Programming. Somehow, I knew that I had to learn HTML if I was to do any kind of Internet activity. There were several websites offering tutorials on web programming like The Web Monkey which offered PHP programming. I don't really care much for PHP so this stunted my growth Internet programming-wise.

I shall talk about my first attempts at website creation and promotion. The first time I was introduced to the internet was when our office received an invitation to join a forum on something which I just dismissed and later on it turned out to be very important. The topic at hand was the Internet. Of course, it was something really new and I had never heard about it. Later, President Clinton of the United States started talking on TV about the Information Superhighway and it seemed vaguely important. Of course, the Internet had been in place for a long time but it was the first time that it was going to be available to the public.

The cost of connecting the the internet was very expensive so I promptly disregarded it. I guess I am one of those who just do not know how to take advantage of other people's money. I could have easily justified getting connected and having my office pay for it and get all the benefits of learning for myself. This is the natural thing to do for most people especially those working for the Philippine Government; they jump at every opportunity to gain something personally at the expense of the people's money.
